As
you well know, the Public Works industry is one that is charged with
managing physical, fixed assets. While it is almost essential to maintain a
database of assets and to use asset management software like PubWorks,
it is becoming more important than ever to use maps to help staff manage
assets and communicate the facts pertaining to them.
As an asset management system with the ability to inventory, in detail,
assets of varying types, track maintenance costs per asset, generate work
orders describing work flows and schedules for assets and the ability to
track requests-for-service based on the asset inventory, it is time for
PubWorks to use maps to help communicate information and analyze data.
To this end, we are proud to announce the hiring of Mary
Schuette. Mary is a highly skilled GIS application programmer; she will
be creating a variety of PubWorks mapping tools that will make
PubWorks-GIS integration an easy-to-use reality.
Our development plan consists of two phases; (1) maps embedded and displayed
directly within the PubWorks application (2) maps exploiting
PubWorks data using ESRI’s ArcGIS.
Mapping functions will allow the user to display Service Calls, Work Orders,
Location and Location Feature assets, as well as work maintenance and cost
histories.
A sort of two-way-street will exist between maps and the information they
rely on. From the screens within PubWorks, maps will be made
accessible and from displayed maps, a wide variety of information will be at
your fingertips and easy to analyze and view.
A Map Viewer will display comprehensive road data symbolized to distinguish
road types and jurisdiction boundaries. The road data will be labeled with
street names or address ranges. A Location asset or Location Feature asset
can be placed on the map with the click of the mouse and automatically
linked back to the PubWorks database. You will have the
ability to query work and cost histories directly from the map as well as
general information of selected feature assets. The map viewer display will
allow you to visualize the actual locations of all assets stored in the
PubWorks database.
Additionally, you will be able to view events (Work Orders and Service
Calls) on the map which will serve a wide variety of purposes; for example
viewing the location of all the pot-hole complaints in the past 60 days.
We’re very excited about this effort and the results it will produce. We expect
to be rolling this product out on July 1st 2008
