Product News: New Database FAQ
|
This FAQ will help you
better understand how changing databases effects you.
Do I have to upgrade?
You don’t have to
upgrade but we very strongly urge that you do. If you have no interest
in either SQL Server product upgrading to Access 2003 can be handled in
a matter of minutes and will be very similar to how we have performed
upgrades in the past.
What level of network/IT
skills does my organization need to possess and manage PubWorks on SQL
Server?
If your organization
already owns SQL Server then the know-how and talent is already in your
possession. If you care to go with SQL Server Express, Tracker Software
can assist in its installation and configuration – it’s really quite
easy to do.
How long will Tracker
Software Corp continue to support the Microsoft Access?
We plan to support MS
Access into the foreseeable future even if Microsoft discontinues
support of the product themselves.
I am considering
purchasing PubWorks for the first time; can I choose to use Access?
Access is still an
excellent choice and one we support whole-heartedly particularly for the
smaller agency or agency that does not plan more than two or three
concurrent users.
What factors will go
into my decision about whether or not to upgrade?
The primary
consideration is two-fold:
1. The number of users and how often these users are in PubWorks
concurrently
2. The size of your database file and how quickly it is growing.
For our smaller
customers, upgrading to the Access 2003 version will be our
recommendation. For larger customers, those with large databases and
many concurrent users, SQL Server will be what we recommend.
Please contact us for a
more precise evaluation and customized recommendation.
How much will it cost to
upgrade?
Upgrading to the Access
2003 version will carry no additional charges and will be performed in a
way that is similar to how we’ve performed upgrades in the past.
Upgrading to the SQL
Server version will carry a charge so please call for specific pricing
information.
Are maintenance charges
different for the SQL Version?
For those customers
electing to upgrade to the SQL Server version maintenance charges will
increase commensurate with the cost of the software upgrade, please call
for specific pricing information.
Can Tracker Software
implement this change for me?
For those
customers electing to upgrade to SQL Server, yes, we strongly recommend
that we come to your site and perform the entire conversion. This will
insure that all data is converted with out loss and that all software is
installed and configured correctly.
For customers electing
to stay with the Access version, the upgrade process will be very simple
and straightforward – very similar to the way we’ve performed upgrades
in the past.

conversion process.
