Notable and Quotable

Identifying your Assets…
"The way we have PubWorks set up is that each street is a location, each block is a segment with the same number as the block. 100 block, 200 block, etc.  We can then number any feature on any given block, assigning odd numbers to features up to the center line on one side of the street and even on the other side - just like the residential addresses. Ultimately every feature in the street will have an address, allowing us to tie activities and cost to location.  In my GIS system I am naming all of my features - inlets, stormpipes, manholes – the same as my PubWorks locations so I can then export data to GIS and show cost by location, visually.”

Bob Gamble, Public Works Director, Green Cove Springs, Florida.

PubWorks supports a hierarchical asset inventory allowing you to structure your data in a natural and intuitive way and it helps you satisfy the requirements GASB34. Also, thanks to our location-based cost accounting it’s easy to perform graphical cost analysis in your GIS system.

Since I started…

“I started patching potholes 30 years ago.  We have a lot more new and better equipment now.  We also have more and more paperwork for what we do and when we do it.”

Wayne Efeortz,  Road and Bridge Foreman, Lewis and Clark County Montana.

“The biggest change over the 12 years since I started would be regulations. Seems like we have many different directions and things to track now.”

Collette Smith, Richland County Public Works, Montana

“There have been big changes over the 40 years since I started.  Back then we didn’t even have calculators, and now you have us running computers.  Concrete trucks used to pull in, and you would measure it and batch it and fill it.  Now the concrete truck pulls in, pushes a button, and the concrete is already batched and gets dispensed and billed at the exact same time.  Keeping track of records is so much easier and faster now.”

Gary Meyer, Public Works Special Projects Manager, Sheridan County Wyoming

Keeping track of your work maintenance history is a central PubWorks feature. PubWorks possesses dozens of screen views and hundreds of reports that allow users to document the work they have performed on the fixed and rolling assets. PubWorks gives users the ability to create reports quickly and easily to meet the ever-changing informational demands of commissioners, council and citizenry.

We’d like to sincerely thank Bob, Wayne, Collette and Gary for taking to time to share their experiences with us.
