Product News: Are You Getting the Most
out of PubWorks?
By Pete Anzalone
Recently, I visited our Idaho customer Bannock County Road & Bridge
in Pocatello. Bannock had just hired a new office manager, Colleen
Robbins, to replace the retiring Linda Boyd. Colleen and her boss,
Dan Copeland, wanted to restructure their PubWorks
database to simplify data collection and improve reporting.
Colleen, Dan, and Brett Grayson thoroughly took me through their new
plan of attack; how they would reduce their tasks list, standardizing
material charge rates for gravel and chips, charging for equipment
based on a 50 minute hour, consolidating locations and reorganizing
projects. I offered a few minor refinements and adjustments to their
plan that would help take advantage of certain subtle powers
possessed by PubWorks.
This exercise was mutually very beneficial. Generally speaking, I
got to see two valuable things: (1) the before and after of how
PubWorkss is being used at Bannock County Road & Bridge
(2) the ease with which Colleen - a PubWorks newcomer
with no formal training - was able to grasp the nature of
PubWorks and what it can do.
As a result of our meeting, Bannock County has a strong feeling of
confidence in their data collection and information reporting plan
for the new fiscal year. The plan might not be perfect, but given
the flexibility of PubWorks, plan adjustments and
refinements will be easy to identify and implement.
